Delivery day. Try taking a freight delivery on a courthouse square. There is angled parking out front, a narrow alley behind, and a lunch crowd you would rather not block. None of that is a problem with ground boxes. No pallet, no liftgate, no appointment to hold open, and one person can walk the sections in a few at a time between customers.
Open the boxes the day they land. Look the sections over even if the cartons look perfect, and do it before install day rather than the morning of. Photograph anything crushed, torn or bent and keep the packaging exactly as it arrived — that is what a carrier claim is built on. Finding a problem the day a box shows up is a phone call; finding it with a crew standing on a ladder is a lost day.
Where to put it. Clay County springs bring thunderstorms and hail and the winters bring ice, and an aluminum cabinet is indifferent to both — it does not rust and it does not mind the swing. The electrical is the part worth babysitting. LEDs and the power supply travel in the same boxes as the frame, so bring the whole delivery inside and keep it dry until the day you hang the sign.

Your kit is cut to a size, welded, and pre-lit before it ships, so the size has to be right the first time. In Liberty that means three phone calls before you order, not after.
1. Ask what you're allowed
Start with the City of Liberty's building or zoning department if you are inside city limits. If your address is out in unincorporated Clay County, the county is generally the place to begin instead. Do not assume Liberty's rules travel — Kearney, Smithville and Excelsior Springs each write their own sign code, and a downtown district can add another layer on top of whichever one applies. Ask for the maximum sign area and height for your zoning district, whether your sign counts as wall-mounted or freestanding, and what setback applies. Sign area is usually tied to your building frontage, so the answer is specific to your address — not to the block or to the business next door.
2. Ask your landlord
If you're in a plaza or center, the landlord's sign criteria sit on top of the city code and are often stricter. Cabinet depth, face color, letter height and mounting method are all commonly spelled out. Get the criteria sheet in writing before you pick a size — it is cheaper than rebuilding a cabinet that the center won't approve.
3. Ask about engineering and wiring
Missouri does not run one statewide building code over every commercial project, so the details come down to the local department and what they have adopted. Expect a freestanding or monument sign to need footing details and structural drawings, and ask up front whether an engineer's seal is wanted on them. An illuminated cabinet generally means a separate electrical permit alongside the sign permit. Plan on a licensed electrician for the final hookup and inspection either way.
