Straight Answer First

What Is An LED Message Center?

An LED message center is an outdoor programmable display built into a sign. Instead of one fixed printed face, a grid of LEDs shows text, graphics and animation that you change yourself from a phone, tablet or computer. You will see the same thing called an electronic message center, an EMC, a programmable LED sign, an LED message board, a scrolling LED sign or a digital marquee sign — they all describe the same product.

The difference from a lighted cabinet sign is simple. A cabinet sign says who you are, permanently. A message center says what is happening today — the special, the price, the hours, the announcement — and it says something different tomorrow without anybody printing a new face or climbing a ladder.

Why Owners Add One

The Sign That Changes With Your Business

  • Change the message in secondsType it, send it, done — from your phone, tablet or computer. No reprinting, no ladder, no service call.
  • Runs your promotion the same day you think of itSlow Tuesday? Put a Tuesday special on the road within a minute of deciding on it.
  • Works after dark, in weather, all yearAn outdoor LED display is readable at night and in gray weather, which is exactly when a printed sign disappears.
  • Pairs with the cabinet sign you already haveThe usual setup: your lighted cabinet on top carrying the business name, the message center below it carrying the message.
  • Check your local rules firstMany towns regulate message centers separately from static signs — brightness, hold time and animation limits are common. Confirm with your township before ordering.
The One Spec That Matters Most

Understanding Pixel Pitch

Pixel pitch is the distance in millimeters between the centers of two neighboring LEDs. It is the number that decides how sharp your sign looks and how much it costs, and it is the one thing worth understanding before you shop.

A smaller pitch packs more LEDs into the same space. The display looks sharper up close and can hold finer text and detail — and it costs more, because there are simply more LEDs in it. A larger pitch costs less and still reads clean from farther back. Neither one is better. The right pitch is the one that matches how far your traffic is from the sign when they actually read it, and that is a conversation worth having before anybody quotes you a number.

Somebody selling you the tightest pitch available for a sign that gets read from two hundred feet away is selling you resolution you will never see. Tell us the road, the speed limit and the setback, and we will tell you what actually makes sense.

Common Questions

Message Center Questions, Answered

What is an LED message center sign?

An LED message center is an outdoor programmable display built into a sign. Instead of a fixed printed face, a grid of LEDs shows text, graphics and animation you change yourself from a phone, tablet or computer. It is also called an electronic message center, an EMC, a programmable LED sign, an LED message board or a digital marquee sign.

What is the difference between a message center and a lighted cabinet sign?

A lighted cabinet sign shows one fixed, printed message and lights it from behind. A message center shows changeable messages you update whenever you want. Most businesses run both together: the cabinet carries the permanent business name and logo, and the message center below it carries today's price, special or announcement.

What does pixel pitch mean on an LED sign?

Pixel pitch is the distance in millimeters between the centers of two neighboring LEDs. A smaller pitch packs more LEDs into the same area, so the display looks sharper up close and can show finer text. A larger pitch costs less and reads fine from farther away. The right pitch depends on how far your traffic is from the sign when they read it.

Can a message center be added to a sign I already have?

Often, yes. Adding a message center to an existing pole, pylon or monument sign is common, but it depends on the structure, the available space and what the existing cabinet and footing were built to carry. Send us photos and your sign's dimensions and we'll tell you straight whether it works.

Do I need a permit for a message center sign?

Usually. Many towns regulate electronic message centers separately from static signs, and rules on brightness, hold time, animation and dwell time are common. Check with your local township or zoning office before ordering, and follow all applicable sign, zoning, electrical, permit and inspection requirements.

Do you install message center signs?

No — that is how you save. You or your contractor handle installation, the same as with our sign kits. We recommend a qualified electrician for the electrical hookup, plus project-specific engineering, permits and inspections where required.

Is financing available on a message center?

Easy financing available. Ask about financing when you request your written quote and we'll go over what applies to your project. Terms and approval vary by application.

How do I get a price on a message center sign?

Tell us the size you have in mind, how far away traffic reads the sign from, whether it is going on a new structure or an existing one, and your town. You get a straight written quote back — no showroom visit and no pressure.
