Sign area is usually tied to your building frontage, so the answer is specific to your address — not to the block or to the business next door.
2. Ask your landlord
If you're in a plaza or center, the landlord's sign criteria sit on top of the city code and are often stricter. Cabinet depth, face color, letter height and mounting method are all commonly spelled out. Get the criteria sheet in writing before you pick a size — it is cheaper than rebuilding a cabinet that the center won't approve.
3. Ask about engineering and wiring
Treat structural review as a given on freestanding work. California's building and energy code, Title 24 included, applies statewide, and seismic anchoring requirements mean a pole or monument sign generally needs footing and attachment details from a California-licensed engineer. Historic or special-district frontage can add design review on top. A separate electrical permit is commonly required for any illuminated sign. Can a kit go on an older Midtown building?
Often, though the building tells you more than we can. Older masonry and wood-frame storefronts vary a lot in what they will carry and how they can be anchored, and some blocks fall under extra design review. How do I know what size to order?
Work backward from what your jurisdiction approves, not from what looks right. Sign area and height limits differ by zone and by corridor across the Sacramento area, so get the number confirmed in writing before you order.
