Highway retail is brutal on signage. On Route 1 a driver gets a couple of seconds, a barrier between them and your lot, and a dozen competing cabinets in the same field of view. Lit wins that fight and unlit loses it, particularly on the winter evenings when the corridor is busiest. Edison regulates signs at the township level, so get the approved size confirmed in writing before we start welding. The cabinet cannot be resized later.

How Your Kit Gets To Edison
For a township with this much freight rolling through it, the parcel network is still the simpler way to receive a sign kit. Roughly 95% of our kits ship FedEx Ground rather than by freight. What shows up. Standard cabinets ship as four long boxes; longer frames come as six, spliced so no package exceeds ground shipping dimensions. Every section is welded to your size with the LEDs mounted inside already, and the 12-volt power supply and the mounting hardware are packed in with the frame as quoted. One delivery covers the whole kit, so you are not waiting on a second box of parts to finish the install.
Delivery day. Most Edison businesses do not want a freight truck in the lot during business hours, and around Oak Tree Road there is frequently nowhere to put one. Ground delivery sidesteps all of it. No dock, no liftgate, no pallet, no delivery appointment to sit around waiting on. The boxes come off the van and one person walks them inside.
Open the boxes the day they land. Look the sections over even if the cartons look perfect, and do it before install day rather than the morning of. Photograph anything crushed, torn or bent and keep the packaging exactly as it arrived — that is what a carrier claim is built on. Finding a problem the day a box shows up is a phone call; finding it with a crew standing on a ladder is a lost day.
Where to put it. Aluminum does not rust and it takes New Jersey summers and January cold without complaint. Store the boxes inside anyway, because the LEDs and the power supply are packed in with the frame sections. An unheated warehouse bay is fine for the aluminum and not ideal for the electronics, so if you have conditioned space, use it right up until install day.

Your kit is cut to a size, welded, and pre-lit before it ships, so the size has to be right the first time. In Edison that means three phone calls before you order, not after.
1. Ask what you're allowed
The Township of Edison handles sign permits and zoning review for addresses inside the township, and Middlesex County may have a say if your sign fronts a county road. Edison borders Metuchen, Woodbridge and Piscataway, and each of those writes its own sign ordinance, so check which side of the municipal line your address actually falls on before you start. Ask for the maximum sign area and height for your zoning district, whether your sign counts as wall-mounted or freestanding, and what setback applies. Sign area is usually tied to your building frontage, so the answer is specific to your address — not to the block or to the business next door.
2. Ask your landlord
If you're in a plaza or center, the landlord's sign criteria sit on top of the city code and are often stricter. Cabinet depth, face color, letter height and mounting method are all commonly spelled out. Get the criteria sheet in writing before you pick a size — it is cheaper than rebuilding a cabinet that the center won't approve.
3. Ask about engineering and wiring
New Jersey's uniform construction code applies statewide but is enforced by the local construction official, which means the township is who you deal with day to day. Ground signs commonly require sealed structural drawings and a footing design from an engineer licensed in New Jersey, and lighted signs generally need an electrical permit filed alongside the sign application. Plan on a licensed electrician for the final hookup and inspection either way. We build the cabinet; the permit, the footing, the disconnect and the sign-off are local work done by local people.

How big should a cabinet be for a Route 1 storefront?
That is a code question before it is a design question. A township sign ordinance generally ties allowable area to your frontage and the road you face, so find out what you are permitted first, then build to the top of it. Once you have the approved number in writing, send it over and we weld the cabinet to match exactly.
Can one kit cover a multi-tenant building?
It can, if what you want is a single cabinet with room for stacked tenant panels. That is a face and graphics decision more than a frame decision, though. We weld the cabinet to the overall dimensions you give us; the panel layout and printing come from the DIY Graphics side. Plan both at once so the divisions land where you want them.
Do I need a permit for an illuminated sign in Edison?
Assume yes. Sign permits go through the township, and an illuminated sign commonly needs an electrical permit as well as the sign approval. If the sign is freestanding you may also be looking at zoning review and sealed drawings. Do all of that before ordering rather than after — the cabinet is welded to the size on your application and there is no trimming it down.
Who should do the electrical hookup?
Leave the final connection to a licensed electrician. These kits are not UL listed, and in New Jersey the electrical work on a lighted sign is permitted and inspected. Your part is mechanical and it is genuinely doable: bolt the sections, mount the cabinet, set the faces. Then the electrician makes the connection and the inspector signs it off.
