1. Ask what you're allowed
Start with the city-parish permitting side of East Baton Rouge Parish, which handles a lot of what a county would handle elsewhere. Zachary, Baker and Central are separate municipalities inside the parish and administer their own rules, and Denham Springs, Gonzales and Port Allen sit in other parishes entirely. Confirm which office covers your parcel before you file. Ask for the maximum sign area and height for your zoning district, whether your sign counts as wall-mounted or freestanding, and what setback applies. Sign area is usually tied to your building frontage, so the answer is specific to your address — not to the block or to the business next door.
2. Ask your landlord
If you're in a plaza or center, the landlord's sign criteria sit on top of the city code and are often stricter. Cabinet depth, face color, letter height and mounting method are all commonly spelled out. 3. Ask about engineering and wiring
Louisiana works from a statewide construction code that includes wind requirements, and a freestanding or pole sign here commonly needs drawings and a footing design sealed by a Louisiana licensed engineer. Some commercial projects in this state also involve plan review at the state level rather than only locally. An illuminated sign generally needs a separate electrical permit, so ask what your address triggers. Plan on a licensed electrician for the final hookup and inspection either way. How far ahead should I order?
Earlier than you think, but for the right reason. Kits are prepared to order and most ship FedEx Ground, so the thing that sets your timeline is usually the approval, not the transit. Get the size signed off in writing, then order. Ordering before the size is settled is how people end up with a welded cabinet that does not match their permit.

Do I need an electrician if the LEDs are already installed?
Yes. The LEDs being mounted in the frame is a fabrication step, not an electrical hookup. Tying the sign into building power is licensed work here and these kits are not UL listed, so a licensed electrician makes that connection and it gets inspected. You do the assembly and mounting; the last connection belongs to someone with a license.
