Virginia does something almost no other state does — a city here can be fully independent, belonging to no county at all. Chesapeake is one of them. That simplifies one thing and complicates another. There is no county office to fall back on, so the city handles it, and a business a few minutes away in Norfolk or Suffolk sits under a different city government with its own sign code. How Your Kit Gets To Chesapeake
Coastal Virginia is well covered by ground service, and roughly 95% of our kits go FedEx Ground instead of freight. That matters more here than it sounds. Hampton Roads addresses often sit behind a bridge or a tunnel, and a freight carrier will price that in and schedule around it. A package truck just shows up on the route it already runs down Battlefield Boulevard or Military Highway.
What shows up. Four long boxes for a standard cabinet, six when splice joints are needed to keep a longer frame inside ground limits. Every section is welded to your dimensions with the LEDs already mounted inside. The 12-volt power supply comes as quoted and the mounting hardware is packed in with the frame, so the whole kit is one delivery rather than a frame now and a parts crate later.
Delivery day. No dock, no liftgate, no pallet jack, no four-hour window. That is the point. A Greenbrier shop unit or a Great Bridge storefront does not have a loading dock and does not need one — the boxes come off the truck by hand and one person can move them inside. Nobody has to stand around all afternoon waiting for a delivery to happen.
Open the boxes the day they land. Look the sections over even if the cartons look perfect, and do it before install day rather than the morning of. Photograph anything crushed, torn or bent and keep the packaging exactly as it arrived — that is what a carrier claim is built on. Finding a problem the day a box shows up is a phone call; finding it with a crew standing on a ladder is a lost day.
Where to put it. Salt air, humidity and a hurricane season are part of doing business on the coast. Aluminum handles it. It does not rust and it takes heat and cold without complaint. The LEDs and the power supply are the parts to protect, and they ship packed in with the frame sections. Keep the boxes indoors and off a wet slab until install day, and bring them in the same afternoon they land if weather is coming.

Your kit is cut to a size, welded, and pre-lit before it ships, so the size has to be right the first time. In Chesapeake that means three phone calls before you order, not after.
1. Ask what you're allowed
Chesapeake is an independent city, so there is no county building department sitting behind it. Start with the City of Chesapeake for both the zoning side and the building side. If your address is actually across the line in Suffolk, Portsmouth or Virginia Beach, you are under that city instead — the boundaries out here are not always obvious from the road. Ask for the maximum sign area and height for your zoning district, whether your sign counts as wall-mounted or freestanding, and what setback applies. Sign area is usually tied to your building frontage, so the answer is specific to your address — not to the block or to the business next door.
2. Ask your landlord
If you're in a plaza or center, the landlord's sign criteria sit on top of the city code and are often stricter. Cabinet depth, face color, letter height and mounting method are all commonly spelled out. Get the criteria sheet in writing before you pick a size — it is cheaper than rebuilding a cabinet that the center won't approve.
3. Ask about engineering and wiring
Virginia administers a statewide building code through local offices. On the coast the wind-load provisions are the ones that bite: a freestanding or pole sign in Hampton Roads commonly needs a footing design and drawings sealed by a Virginia-licensed engineer. An illuminated cabinet generally requires an electrical permit in addition to the sign permit. Confirm both with the city before ordering. Plan on a licensed electrician for the final hookup and inspection either way. We build the cabinet; the permit, the footing, the disconnect and the sign-off are local work done by local people.

Will a kit like this stand up to coastal weather?
The cabinet is welded aluminum, which does not rust and handles heat and cold. We do not rate these kits for wind and we do not call them weatherproof, and we are not going to pretend otherwise. If your project needs a wind-load rating, that comes from an engineer's drawings and the footing design, not from the cabinet. What we build is the frame, cut to your approved size.
Can I do a double-sided sign for a corner lot?
The same frame supports single-sided or double-sided, so it is a choice you make when you request the quote rather than a different product entirely. On a corner near a signalized intersection, double-sided is the usual call. Remember that faces and graphics are a separate product from the standard kit, so plan those alongside the cabinet.
Who issues a sign permit in Chesapeake?
The city does, and only the city. Because Chesapeake is an independent Virginia city rather than part of a county, there is no second office to try if you do not like the answer. Assume a permit is required for an illuminated sign and expect a separate electrical permit on top of it. Freestanding signs commonly need sealed drawings here. Get the approved dimensions in writing before you order, because a welded cabinet cannot be trimmed later.
Can I wire the sign up myself?
No. Hire a licensed electrician for the connection. These kits are not UL listed and the hookup is permitted, inspected work in Virginia. You handle everything mechanical — sections bolted square, cabinet mounted, faces set, power supply placed. The last few feet of wire belong to somebody with a license, and that cost belongs in the budget from day one.
