1. Ask what you're allowed
If your address is inside city limits, start with the City of Fresno and ask for the group that handles sign permits and planning review. Outside the city, Fresno County is your authority. Clovis is a separate city with its own sign ordinance, and so are Sanger, Selma and Kingsburg — being three miles apart out here means nothing about sharing a rulebook. Ask for the maximum sign area and height for your zoning district, whether your sign counts as wall-mounted or freestanding, and what setback applies. Sign area is usually tied to your building frontage, so the answer is specific to your address — not to the block or to the business next door.
2. Ask your landlord
If you're in a plaza or center, the landlord's sign criteria sit on top of the city code and are often stricter. Cabinet depth, face color, letter height and mounting method are all commonly spelled out. Get the criteria sheet in writing before you pick a size — it is cheaper than rebuilding a cabinet that the center won't approve.
3. Ask about engineering and wiring
Plan for engineering on anything freestanding. California building and energy code, including Title 24, applies statewide, and this is seismic country, so footing depth and anchorage details generally have to come from an engineer licensed in California. Wind exposure on open Valley frontage can drive the design too. An illuminated sign typically needs its own electrical permit as well. Will a kit work on a pole sign out on a county road?
The cabinet side, yes — we weld it to your size and ship it in sections. The pole, the footing and the engineering are yours to arrange locally. Pole and pylon projects are also one of the cases where freight makes more sense than ground, so tell us it is a pole job when you request your quote.
Can I get a kit sized for a monument sign face?
Yes. Give us the opening dimensions you need to fill and we weld to those numbers. The same frame supports single-sided or double-sided, which matters on a two-way street like Shaw. Faces and graphics are not part of the standard kit; those are handled separately on our DIY Graphics page.
What does Fresno require for a lighted business sign?
Assume a permit is required. The City of Fresno handles signs inside city limits and Fresno County handles addresses outside them, and an illuminated cabinet commonly needs a separate electrical permit on top of the sign permit. Who should do the electrical hookup?
Hire a licensed electrician for that last step. These kits are not UL listed, and the power connection is inspected work in California no matter how simple it looks. Assemble the frame, mount the cabinet, set your faces — then hand it off. Getting an electrician lined up early is worth doing, since the permit inspection and the hookup tend to land in the same week.
