They all describe the same thing — a grid of LEDs you update yourself from a phone, tablet or computer.

How Your Kit Gets To Chicago

What shows up. Long boxes holding four welded frame sections with the LEDs already mounted inside, or six sections with splice joints on a larger cabinet, cut specifically so each package stays inside ground shipping limits. The power supply and hardware are packed in with them. In a city building the sections matter twice over: four flat pieces go up a stairwell or through a narrow storefront door where an assembled cabinet never would.
Delivery day. Boxes at your door, and the only real Chicago question is who is there to take them in. A storefront with somebody behind the counter is ideal; a vacant build-out with boxes on the sidewalk is not. If your space is not occupied yet, have it delivered to your home or your contractor's shop instead.
Open the boxes the day they land. Look the sections over even if the cartons look perfect, and do it before install day rather than the morning of. Photograph anything crushed, torn or bent and keep the packaging exactly as it arrived — that is what a carrier claim is built on. Finding a problem the day a box shows up is a phone call; finding it with a crew standing on a ladder is a lost day.
Where to put it. Aluminum handles a Chicago winter without complaint, but the LEDs and the power supply ride in the same boxes, so get them inside rather than leaving them in an entryway through a lake-effect week. Let cold hardware warm up before you start assembling in an unheated garage in January.

1. Ask what you're allowed
Chicago proper handles sign permits through the Department of Buildings, and the review is more involved than in most cities — size, projection over the public way, and location can all pull in extra approvals. Ask for the maximum sign area and height for your zoning district, whether your sign counts as wall-mounted or freestanding, and what setback applies. Sign area is usually tied to your building frontage, so the answer is specific to your address — not to the block or to the business next door.
2. Ask your landlord
If you're in a plaza or center, the landlord's sign criteria sit on top of the city code and are often stricter. Cabinet depth, face color, letter height and mounting method are all commonly spelled out. Get the criteria sheet in writing before you pick a size — it is cheaper than rebuilding a cabinet that the center won't approve.
3. Ask about engineering and wiring
Illinois has no single statewide commercial building code; Chicago enforces its own building code and suburbs adopt their own. Lake-effect wind on tall or projecting signs means a freestanding or pole sign commonly needs a footing design and sealed drawings from an Illinois-licensed engineer. Chicago also regulates who may erect certain signs, so ask the department what applies to your size and mounting before you order.
