How Your Kit Gets To Birmingham
Birmingham is a distribution town at the junction of I-65 and I-20/59, which means ground service here is dense rather than occasional. Roughly 95% of our kits ship FedEx Ground rather than by freight, so a shop in Homewood or a suite off the 459 loop gets the boxes on the same truck that already runs the street. On the steeper streets and the older commercial blocks around here, where the back of the building is often a wall and the front is the only access, being able to walk a box in through the front door is the difference that matters.
Open the boxes the day they land. Look the sections over even if the cartons look perfect, and do it before install day rather than the morning of. Photograph anything crushed, torn or bent and keep the packaging exactly as it arrived — that is what a carrier claim is built on. Finding a problem the day a box shows up is a phone call; finding it with a crew standing on a ladder is a lost day.
Where to put it. Alabama summers are long and humid, spring brings a real storm season, and the occasional ice event still shuts the hills down. Aluminum handles the heat and the cold and does not rust. The LEDs and the power supply are another story, so keep the boxes indoors and dry until you are ready to install rather than staging them outside.

Your kit is cut to a size, welded, and pre-lit before it ships, so the size has to be right the first time. In Birmingham that means three phone calls before you order, not after.
1. Ask what you're allowed
Jefferson County is a patchwork of independent cities and that is the thing to get straight first. Homewood, Vestavia Hills, Mountain Brook, Hoover and the rest each run their own sign ordinances, so a Birmingham mailing address does not mean the City of Birmingham reviews your sign. Start with the building or zoning department for the municipality your parcel actually sits in. Ask for the maximum sign area and height for your zoning district, whether your sign counts as wall-mounted or freestanding, and what setback applies. Sign area is usually tied to your building frontage, so the answer is specific to your address — not to the block or to the business next door.
2. Ask your landlord
If you're in a plaza or center, the landlord's sign criteria sit on top of the city code and are often stricter. Cabinet depth, face color, letter height and mounting method are all commonly spelled out. Get the criteria sheet in writing before you pick a size — it is cheaper than rebuilding a cabinet that the center won't approve.
3. Ask about engineering and wiring
Alabama building requirements cover structural loading, and a freestanding or pole sign here commonly needs drawings and a foundation design sealed by an Alabama licensed engineer. An illuminated cabinet generally needs a separate electrical permit as well. Some of the over-the-mountain cities apply design standards on top of that, so ask about materials and lighting limits early. Straight Answers For Birmingham Businesses
When would my order ship by freight instead?
It is the exception, not the norm. Freight is reserved for cabinets too long to splice down sensibly, for pole and pylon projects where the structure itself will not go by package, and for large multi-sign orders. Everything else, which is roughly 95% of what we send out, moves FedEx Ground in boxes one person can handle.
My building has no dock. Is that a problem?
Not at all, and that describes most of the places we ship to. There is no pallet and no liftgate involved, so nothing needs to come down off a truck bed. The boxes get handed off like any other ground delivery and one person can move them inside. Older commercial buildings with front-only access work fine.
Does Birmingham require a sign permit?
Assume a permit is required and start by confirming who issues it. Jefferson County has a lot of separate municipalities, and Homewood, Vestavia Hills, Mountain Brook and Hoover each administer their own sign rules, so your mailing address is not a reliable guide. An illuminated sign commonly needs an electrical permit too. Get the approved dimensions in writing before ordering, since the cabinet is welded to size.
What about the electrical side?
That part goes to a licensed electrician. These kits are not UL listed, and connecting a lit sign to building power is inspected work in Alabama, so it is not a corner to cut on a DIY project. Your side is the mechanical work — sections, fasteners, mounting, faces. Book the electrician while you are still waiting on the boxes.
