How Your Kit Gets To Milwaukee
Try getting a fifty-three foot trailer down a Riverwest side street on a Tuesday. You do not have to. Roughly 95% of our kits ship FedEx Ground instead of freight, so what arrives is a parcel van on its normal route, not a truck that needs half the block. Delivery day. A 1920s storefront does not have a dock and never will. It has a front door on the corner and maybe an alley out back, which is plenty. There is no liftgate to add, no pallet to break down and no four-hour window to lose. One person carries the boxes in, and you are not blocking a bus lane or a loading zone doing it.
Open the boxes the day they land. Look the sections over even if the cartons look perfect, and do it before install day rather than the morning of. Photograph anything crushed, torn or bent and keep the packaging exactly as it arrived — that is what a carrier claim is built on. Finding a problem the day a box shows up is a phone call; finding it with a crew standing on a ladder is a lost day.
Where to put it. Wind comes off the lake and the freeze-thaw runs from November on, and aluminum handles that fine because it does not rust. What it will not handle for you is the basement. Plenty of older buildings here have a damp one, and the LEDs and power supply ship in with the frame sections, so keep those boxes somewhere dry and heated upstairs rather than putting them down on a cellar floor.
Measure Twice. Order Once.
Your kit is cut to a size, welded, and pre-lit before it ships, so the size has to be right the first time. In Milwaukee that means three phone calls before you order, not after.
1. Ask what you're allowed
Start with the City of Milwaukee's building and zoning office if you are actually in the city. Milwaukee County is a mosaic of independent municipalities — Wauwatosa, West Allis, Cudahy, Glendale and the rest each run their own sign code and none of them answer to the city. Check the line before you call, because the boundaries here run through neighborhoods rather than around them. Ask for the maximum sign area and height for your zoning district, whether your sign counts as wall-mounted or freestanding, and what setback applies. Sign area is usually tied to your building frontage, so the answer is specific to your address — not to the block or to the business next door.
2. Ask your landlord
If you're in a plaza or center, the landlord's sign criteria sit on top of the city code and are often stricter. Cabinet depth, face color, letter height and mounting method are all commonly spelled out. Get the criteria sheet in writing before you pick a size — it is cheaper than rebuilding a cabinet that the center won't approve.
3. Ask about engineering and wiring
Wisconsin administers a statewide commercial building code, with local departments handling much of the plan review. A freestanding or pole sign commonly needs a footing set below frost depth plus structural drawings, and taller work may want a Wisconsin-licensed engineer's seal. Assume a lighted cabinet also needs an electrical permit separate from the sign permit, and expect the electrical work to require a licensed contractor. Can the cabinet mount to an old brick building?
It can, but the wall decides the hardware, not us. Century-old masonry varies enormously and some of it has been repointed and some has not, so have somebody who knows the building look at the mounting surface before you order. We ship mounting hardware with the kit; anchors suited to your specific wall are a local call and worth making early.
What is not included in the kit?

Do I need a permit for a lighted sign in Milwaukee?
Assume yes. Inside the city, sign permits generally go through the City of Milwaukee, and an illuminated cabinet commonly needs a separate electrical permit alongside it. If your address is in one of the surrounding municipalities, that city writes its own rules and you should ask there instead. Get the approved dimensions in writing before ordering, because the cabinet gets welded to that size.
Who should do the electrical hookup?
Put a licensed electrician on it. These kits are not UL listed, and in Wisconsin the power connection is licensed and inspected work with a permit attached to it. Everything before that is yours — bolt the sections square, mount the cabinet, set the faces. The smart move is booking the electrician when you order rather than when the boxes show up.
