One City, One County, A Few Exceptions.

Indianapolis calls itself the Crossroads of America and actually earns the name — I-65, I-69 and I-70 all land here and I-465 wraps the whole thing. Underneath that sits Marion County, and under Unigov the city and county are largely one government. Our prepared DIY LED sign kits ship anywhere inside that loop and well past it, with the lighting already mounted in the welded frame.

A full-service quote in a metro this size carries the metro's overhead: the showroom, the boom truck, the crew standing in your lot for two days. Ours carries none of it. We weld the cabinet to your size, ship it in sections you can carry, and you handle the install — keeping up to 60% depending on your project.

Around The Metro

Shipping To Indianapolis And Every Town Around It

Kits ship to Carmel, Fishers, Greenwood, Speedway, Lawrence, Beech Grove, Plainfield and Avon — and everywhere in between. If FedEx delivers there, your sign kit can too.

Unigov merged Indianapolis and Marion County back in 1970, and for a business owner that usually makes permitting simpler than it is in metros that never consolidated — one office, one code, one set of answers. The exceptions are what catch people. Speedway, Beech Grove, Lawrence and Southport kept their own municipal governments, and the ring counties are separate entirely. Find out which one you are genuinely in, get your approved sign size in writing, and we weld the cabinet to that number.

Call it what you like — an illuminated cabinet sign, a light box sign, or an outdoor lighted sign box — it’s the same product: an aluminum LED sign cabinet, built in our shop and shipped to your door as a ready-to-assemble kit.

Every prepared kit includes: an aluminum frame cut to your size with welded corners, LEDs mounted inside, and a 12-volt power supply with wiring hardware as listed in your written quote. Sign faces and graphics are available separately through DIY Graphics.

Programmable LED Message Center Signs

A lot of Indianapolis owners shopping for a lighted sign are really after the changeable kind — a programmable LED sign that shows something different tomorrow than it does today. That product goes by a pile of different names: an electronic message center (EMC), an LED message board, an outdoor LED display, a scrolling LED sign or a digital marquee sign. They all describe the same thing — a grid of LEDs you update yourself from a phone, tablet or computer.

The usual setup on a Indianapolis storefront or roadside pole is both signs together: the lighted cabinet up top carrying your business name permanently, and the message center below it carrying today’s special, price, hours or announcement. One says who you are. The other says what is happening right now.

Check this before you order. Many towns around Indianapolis regulate electronic message centers separately from static signs, and limits on brightness, hold time, dwell time and animation are common. Confirm the rules with your local township or zoning office first — the same as you would for any freestanding sign. Easy financing available; ask about it when you request your written quote.

Shipping & Delivery

How Your Kit Gets To Indianapolis

Indianapolis is a ground-shipping town by trade. The interstates cross here and the parcel network is built around that fact, which quietly works in your favor. Roughly 95% of our kits move FedEx Ground rather than freight, so your boxes ride in on the van that already stops at your building most days. Nothing to schedule, and no freight terminal sitting in the middle of the process.

What shows up. You get four long boxes for a standard cabinet, or six when a longer frame needs splice joints to stay inside ground limits. The sections arrive welded to your size with the LEDs mounted inside them, and the power supply and mounting hardware are packed in with the frame as quoted. Everything lands at once. There is no separate parts crate showing up a week behind the rest of it.

Delivery day. Businesses on the near east and near south sides tend to work out of older buildings with a curb, a front door and no dock at all. That is all this delivery needs. No liftgate, no pallet, no appointment window eating an afternoon you could be billing. One person can move the boxes from the sidewalk to the back room in a few trips.

Open the boxes the day they land. Look the sections over even if the cartons look perfect, and do it before install day rather than the morning of. Photograph anything crushed, torn or bent and keep the packaging exactly as it arrived — that is what a carrier claim is built on. Finding a problem the day a box shows up is a phone call; finding it with a crew standing on a ladder is a lost day.

Where to put it. Indiana hands you a hard freeze in January and heavy humidity by July, and aluminum takes both without rusting. The electronics want more care than that. Keep the LED and power supply boxes indoors, and if they have been sitting somewhere cold, let them come up to room temperature still sealed before you cut the tape — that keeps you from condensing moisture straight onto the boards.

The exceptions go by truck. A cabinet too long to splice down into shippable sections, a pole or pylon project with structural parts that will not box, or several cabinets ordered at once are all cheaper and safer palletized — and if yours is one of those, it is priced that way in your written quote up front, not added later.
Before You Order

Measure Twice. Order Once.

Your kit is cut to a size, welded, and pre-lit before it ships, so the size has to be right the first time. In Indianapolis that means three phone calls before you order, not after.

1. Ask what you're allowed

Start with the City of Indianapolis and Marion County permitting office, which under Unigov is the same place — that saves a step most metros do not save. If your address sits in Speedway, Beech Grove, Lawrence or Southport, those kept their own governments and write their own sign rules. Hamilton, Hendricks and Johnson counties are separate again, with separate answers. Ask for the maximum sign area and height for your zoning district, whether your sign counts as wall-mounted or freestanding, and what setback applies. Sign area is usually tied to your building frontage, so the answer is specific to your address — not to the block or to the business next door.

2. Ask your landlord

If you're in a plaza or center, the landlord's sign criteria sit on top of the city code and are often stricter. Cabinet depth, face color, letter height and mounting method are all commonly spelled out. Get the criteria sheet in writing before you pick a size — it is cheaper than rebuilding a cabinet that the center won't approve.

3. Ask about engineering and wiring

Indiana works from a statewide building code that local departments administer, and a freestanding or pole sign here commonly needs footing and structural drawings, sometimes with an Indiana-registered engineer's seal on them. Assume an illuminated cabinet also needs an electrical permit separate from the sign permit. Ask about both in the same conversation so you are not standing in line twice. Plan on a licensed electrician for the final hookup and inspection either way. We build the cabinet; the permit, the footing, the disconnect and the sign-off are local work done by local people.

Once you have your approved number, send it over and we cut to it exactly. Nothing here is legal or engineering advice — requirements change by jurisdiction and by site, so confirm yours with the City of Indianapolis and Marion County, or your own city hall if you are in one of the excluded cities, your landlord, and a licensed electrician before ordering.
Kit Or Sign Company?

DIY Kit vs. Hiring A Indianapolis Sign Company

The short answer: a full-service sign company sells a finished project — survey, fabrication, installation — and prices it that way. We are not an Indianapolis sign installation company. We build the lighted sign cabinet itself, ship it to your door, and coach you while you or your contractor handle the install. That one difference is where the savings come from.

Indianapolis Questions

Straight Answers For Indianapolis Businesses

Does Unigov mean one permit covers everything inside I-465?

Close, but not quite. Consolidation put most of Marion County under one permitting office, which is genuinely simpler than a metro split among thirty city halls. Speedway, Beech Grove, Lawrence and Southport are the exceptions inside the county line, and anything past the county is its own government. Ask at your specific address rather than assuming the loop is one jurisdiction.

Can my contractor assemble and hang it instead of me?

Plenty of owners do exactly that. The sections bolt together on sawhorses or a clean floor with the LEDs already inside, so a crew is squaring a frame rather than building and wiring one. It is a short job for anyone who hangs equipment for a living. Just remember the faces are a separate product on our DIY Graphics page, so tell your crew what is actually arriving.

Do I need a permit for a lighted sign in Indianapolis?

Assume yes. Sign permits here are generally handled by the consolidated City of Indianapolis and Marion County office, unless you are in one of the excluded cities that kept its own government. An illuminated cabinet commonly needs a separate electrical permit as well. Get the approved dimensions in writing before ordering, because we weld the cabinet to that exact size and it cannot be cut down afterward.

Who should do the electrical hookup?

Hire a licensed electrician and put it in the budget from the start. Our kits are not UL listed, which means the power connection is licensed, inspected work in Indiana rather than a weekend task. You bolt the sections square, mount the cabinet and set the faces. The electrician takes it from the wire and pulls whatever electrical permit the city wants.

How much does a lighted business sign cost in Indianapolis?

Less than most owners expect — because you skip the full-service labor. Our aluminum LED sign cabinet kits run $41 per foot of frame length in the 4-inch depth, $47 for 7-inch and $67 for 10-inch, pre-lit with the power supply included as quoted. As an example comparison, a 4' x 8' lighted sign quoted at $3,112 by a full-service company runs about $984 as a kit — savings are potential, not guaranteed. Sign faces and graphics are separate, prices are subject to change, and every kit is quoted in writing to your exact size.

Do you install signs in Indianapolis?

No — we are not an Indianapolis sign installation company, and that is exactly why the price works. We build and ship the lighted cabinet; you or a local contractor handle the mounting, with a qualified electrician for the electrical hookup. Real guidance from the builder comes with every kit, and your local township sets the permit and inspection rules.

Do you sell programmable LED message center signs in Indianapolis?

Yes. An LED message center — also called an electronic message center, an EMC, a programmable LED sign, an LED message board or a digital marquee — is an outdoor display built into a sign that you change yourself from a phone, tablet or computer. It ships to Indianapolis the same way our lighted cabinets do, and it is quoted in writing to your size. Many towns regulate message centers separately from static signs, so confirm brightness, hold time and animation rules with your local township before ordering. Easy financing available — ask when you request your quote.

What is the difference between a lighted cabinet sign and an LED message center?

A lighted cabinet sign shows one fixed printed face and lights it from behind — it carries your business name permanently. An LED message center shows changeable messages you update whenever you want. Most businesses run both on the same structure: the cabinet on top for the name and logo, the message center below it for today's special, price or hours.

What is an illuminated cabinet sign?

An illuminated cabinet sign — also called a light box sign — is an aluminum box with lighting inside and translucent faces: the classic lighted sign above a storefront. Ours ships as a prepared kit with the frame cut to your exact size, LEDs already mounted inside, and a 12-volt power supply included as quoted.

We're a nationwide shop — not a local Indianapolis sign company — and that's exactly why the price works. DIY kits are not UL listed; please check with your local township and follow all sign, zoning, electrical, inspection and installation guidelines before ordering.
