1. Ask what you're allowed
Start with the Borough of Irwin if you are inside the borough line, which is smaller than most people assume — a lot of Irwin-addressed businesses actually sit in North Huntingdon Township, and that is a different office with a different ordinance. Westmoreland County and PennDOT may also be involved if your sign relates to a state road like Route 30. Ask for the maximum sign area and height for your zoning district, whether your sign counts as wall-mounted or freestanding, and what setback applies. 2. Ask your landlord

Ask who that is early. Freestanding signs commonly need sealed engineering, and lighted signs generally need a separate electrical permit.
