Open the boxes the day they land. Look the sections over even if the cartons look perfect, and do it before install day rather than the morning of. Photograph anything crushed, torn or bent and keep the packaging exactly as it arrived — that is what a carrier claim is built on. Finding a problem the day a box shows up is a phone call; finding it with a crew standing on a ladder is a lost day.
Where to put it. Summit County runs the full freeze-thaw cycle every winter, and the salt spray off the interstates gets on everything. Aluminum does not rust, so the cabinet itself is not worried about any of that. The LEDs and the power supply are another matter — they ship in with the frame sections, so pull those boxes into a heated space and leave them there until install day.

Your kit is cut to a size, welded, and pre-lit before it ships, so the size has to be right the first time. In Akron that means three phone calls before you order, not after.
1. Ask what you're allowed
Start with the City of Akron if your address is inside city limits. If you are out in the townships, Summit County is generally the place to begin instead. Either way, ask early which office handles sign permits at your specific address, because the suburbs ringing Akron each run their own zoning code and none of them are obligated to match the city's. Ask for the maximum sign area and height for your zoning district, whether your sign counts as wall-mounted or freestanding, and what setback applies. Sign area is usually tied to your building frontage, so the answer is specific to your address — not to the block or to the business next door.
2. Ask your landlord
If you're in a plaza or center, the landlord's sign criteria sit on top of the city code and are often stricter. Cabinet depth, face color, letter height and mounting method are all commonly spelled out. 3. Ask about engineering and wiring
Ohio works from a statewide building code that local departments administer, and a freestanding or pole sign here commonly needs footing details and structural drawings before anybody signs off. Assume an illuminated cabinet triggers a separate electrical permit on top of the sign permit, and ask whether they want an Ohio-licensed engineer's stamp on the drawings. Do I need a permit for a lighted sign in Akron?
Assume yes. Sign permits in this area are generally handled by the City of Akron building department inside city limits, or by Summit County and the individual townships outside them, and an illuminated sign commonly needs its own electrical permit alongside the sign permit.
